Medication Abortion Procedures
Medication abortion is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy up to nine weeks. It involves taking two medications, mifepristone and misoprostol, to terminate the pregnancy. This process is similar to a miscarriage and can be managed at home with medical support.
How It Works
- Consultation: You will have a consultation with a healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy and discuss your options.
- First Medication (Mifepristone): This medication blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed for the pregnancy to continue.
- Second Medication (Misoprostol): Taken 24-48 hours later, this medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
What to Expect
- Cramping and bleeding are common and indicate that the abortion is progressing.
- You may also experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or mild fever.
Follow-Up Care
- A follow-up appointment is essential to ensure the abortion is complete and to check your health.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection.
